Uri Yahil, JD, RYT

Martial arts yoga academy is the brainchild of attorney-turned-yogi Uri Yahil.

Uri has been training various forms of martial arts since childhood, and now focuses on No-Gi submission grappling, training out of 10th planet Dallas where he is a blue belt.

Uri’s yoga journey began as a teenager exploring heated styles of hatha yoga. Over time, Uri expanded his personal practice into other styles and developed a deep appreciation for the philosophical and spiritual dimensions of yoga. In 2024, Uri completed his 200-hour YTT at the Dallas Yoga Center.

It didn’t take long to see that martial arts and yoga are a perfect complement to one another. Both require mind and body to work together and both reward discipline and patience. These principles extend beyond the mats.

The Martial Arts Yoga Academy embraces the “forever a white-belt” beginner mentality and recognizes our ability to learn from many different styles and systems if we keep an open mind and an open heart.

FAQ

Will yoga help my martial arts training?

While there are no guarantees in life, yoga will almost certainly help your martial arts training, regardless of the style or system you practice. Yoga does this by training you to be more intentional with your movements and your actions.

Yoga is associated with improved balance and proprioception. It can improve your physical performance and reduce your risk of injury by increasing your muscle tone and mobility. Practicing yoga has also been correlated with improved sleep and recovery, which is vital to keep you coming back to class.

How long will it take to notice changes in my body?

We all want to look good and feel good. Every body is different, and no one can promise you a specific end result like washboard abs or being able to do a full split.

But, with a little commitment to a simple daily routine and a couple of structured classes a week, many people see noticeable improvement in their movement and function within just a few months.

Of course, yoga is about building a practice of self-care for a lifetime.

REMEMBER YOGA IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR:

Physical Therapy;

Occupational Therapy;

Sports and Personal Fitness Training.

Always consult with your trusted healthcare provider(s) before beginning any new fitness program, including yoga.

What can I expect from a group class?

Group classes are currently hosted twice a week at 10th Planet Dallas. To check the schedule and learn more visit 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu | North Dallas TX (10thplanetjjdallas.com)

Group classes are geared towards beginners and designed to address common sources of bodily dysfunction in grapplers like tight hip flexors, rounded shoulders and stiff joints. Particular emphasis is placed on asymmetric training to address imbalances that form over time from preferred stances and techniques (e.g., always falling to the right hip in rubber guard).

A 10th Planet membership or day-pass is required to participate in group classes.

What can I expect from a private class?

Private classes give an opportunity to observe your movement patterns carefully and come up with a plan tailored to your specific goals.

In addition to real-time feedback on postures and stretches, you will receive recommendations for at-home practice, pre-class warm-ups and post-class cooldowns.

All private class students will also receive promotional discounts on future online content!
